Our Story
Eight Degrees Up was founded by Sascha and Nola Heckmann in 2014 to learn alongside other educators, because when we know better, we do better. Between them they have held nearly every role within a school: teacher, instructional coach, curriculum designer, principal, superintendent, consultant, and author. They have worked across three continents and five countries, in public and private schools, domestic and international settings, resource-challenged and resource-abundant communities. They have explored the most powerful strategies the profession has to offer: collaborative practice, student agency, personalized learning, always in pursuit of better outcomes for students and better balance for the teachers serving them.
And yet, despite everything our profession has learned, the sustainability crisis has only deepened. Knowing more has not meant doing better. Resources have remained largely fixed while expectations have multiplied. COVID reshaped everything and strained everyone. Cell phones and social media complicated what it means to reach and teach young people. The complexity facing educators today is unlike anything previous generations were asked to carry, and it is wearing out the very people our students need most.
That was until AI arrived. Not as another layer of complexity, but as the first tool we have encountered that can actually help us carry it. Since its public introduction, Sascha and Nola have brought the same practitioner lens to AI that they have brought to every exploration, testing in context, learning what works, and developing a human-first approach that preserves professional expertise, amplifies human judgment, and lightens the load for educators.
